  • Fort Scott Community College freshmen Aaron Mason and Ka’ai Tom earned NJCAA All-America honors, Tom third team and Mason honorable mention.
    Tom batted .387, reached base 50 percent of the time, slugged .761 and collected 46 runs scored, 60 hits, 11 doubles, seven triples, 11 home runs and 57 RBI in 53 games while striking out fewer times (21) than he walked (25) and stealing 23 bases in 27 attempts (85 percent success rate).
    Mason recorded a perfect 11-0 mark in 16 overall appearances, 12 starts. He struck out 75 in 82.1 innings and registered a 1.97 ERA. Meanwhile, Mason walked only 10 batters and allowed 18 earned runs. He allowed one homer.
    The baseball team earned a composite 3.37 GPA and five players earned awards: John Morey, a nominee for NJCAA Male Student-Athlete of the Year, received NJCAA Pinnacle Award for Academic Excellence (4.00 GPA), Reyn Sugai an NJCAA Award for Superior Academic Achievement (3.80-3.99) and Alex Drew, Joe Hermsen and Brent Mason an NJCAA Award for Exemplary Academic Achievement (3.60-3.79).
    In addition, several Greyhound players are enjoying summer baseball: Ryan Ahrens with Slippery Rock of the Sliders Prospect League. Lancy Barkley with the Topeka Golden Giants of the Walter Johnson League. Alex Copeland and John Lynch with the Redding Colt ‘45s of the Far West League. Pittsburg native and Colgan product Sam Gilbert, Aaron Mason and Parker O’Dell with the Madisonville Tradewater Pirates of the Ohio Valley League. Josh Griffith, Payton Logan and Ka’ai Tom with the Sherrill Silversmiths of the New York Collegiate League. Joe Hermsen, Garrett McKenzie, John Morey and Ben Story with the Myrtle Beach Hammerheads of the Beach League. Landon Holifield with the Syracuse Saltcats of the New York Collegiate League. Doug Jenkins with the Mooresville All-Americans of the American Collegiate League. Nick Kevlin with the Laconia Muskrats of the New England Collegiate League. Ethan Peacock with the Newton Rebels of the Walter Johnson League. Cash Pechlin with the Hutchinson Monarchs of the Walter Johnson League. Jeff Rousseau and Cody Tolbert with the Orlando College Park Freedom of the Florida Collegiate Summer League. Reyn Sugai with the Chillicothe Mudcats of the MINK League. Zach Taylor with the Denver Bats of the Rocky Mountain League.
    The Greyhound softball program added Southeast graduate Alex Yeoman and Ottawa second-third baseman Akoda Black.
    “I was already missing softball and this was the perfect fit,” Yeoman said in a media release.
    “I am very excited to have Alex and Akoda as Lady Hounds next year,” FSCC head coach Kristin Schalk said. “They had great high school careers and ready to see what they can do at FSCC.”
    Fellow Southeast graduate Kalee Ewbank already signed with the Greyhounds.
