  • Donna Lyerla, director of the Lyerla Music Studio, has seen a lot in her years as director of the Lyerla Music Studio, including a lot of talented and hard-working students who have accomplished a great deal.
This year she saw something she hadn’t seen before at the annual Improv Awards Party she hosts every spring.
One student, Amanda Hoffman, won the top trophy in the Musical Marathon, the top Growing Trophy with the most overall points and placed first in individual performance at the party for her rendition of “Over the Rainbow” from the 1939 movie of “The Wizard of Oz.”
“Amanda won everything,” Lyerla said. “This is the first time in my 34 years of teaching music that I’ve had one student win in all categories. Congratulations to her for all the work it took to achieve this.”
Her other honors included a level 7 musicianship-theory test consecutive certificate and a special achievement award in sight reading.
Hoffman, who will be a Pittsburg High School sophomore in the fall, dressed up as Dorothy to play “Over the Rainbow,” complete with ruby slippers.
“The theme for the party this year was ‘At the Movies’, and I really like ‘The Wizard of Oz’ movie and ‘Over the Rainbow’,” she said.
She has been taking piano lessons for seven years and had been a student in the Lyerla Studio for the last five years.
“I did dance and karate, then I thought I’d try music,” Hoffman said. “I liked it from the very start.”
Hoffman has also been playing flute since sixth grade, and is in the PHS band.
“Amanda has been in the District Band and Four-State Honor Band in flute, and plays the flute occasionally at church,” said her mother, Lorene Hoffman.
Her daughter’s other interests include reading, cooking, and hanging out with her friends. She’s a member of the Success Express 4-H Club and participates in several  projects, including photography.
“I played softball at PHS, I’ll play basketball and I’m doing cross-country in the fall,” Hoffman said.
As much as she enjoys music, she does not plan on pursuing a musical career.
“I want to be a veterinarian,” Hoffman said. “I like animals.”
