  • On Thursday March 28th, Mrs Marti Tuck, SPHS school counselor, took seven students who were interested in nursing to Pittsburg State University. Students who attended were Ashton Wood, Jessica Caswell, Darby Kramer, Carly Parker, Brooke Milroy, Sissy Nguyen, and Emily Petty. The day was full of lots of information and hands on experience.
The day started with a quick introduction session, then it was on to the hands on activities. There were six sessions for the day and everyone got to experience them all. Each session focused on something different with injections, sterile gowning, vital signs and blood pressure station, starting an IV, health simulation center, and ports.
Sophomore Carly Parker stated, “Learning how to give injections and then practicing it on oranges and hotdogs was my favorite part of the day.”
After all of the sessions, students went into a lecture room and learned about the nursing program at PSU. Then it was time to win some prizes and play trivia, junior Darby Kramer said that the trivia game was one of her favorite parts of the day.
All of the girls agreed that it was a very worth-while day and they would go back again if given the option. Parker said, “I got a lot of information about nursing and it has helped me in deciding what I want to do in college. I think one of the reasons I liked it a lot was because we were able to have hands on experience which really provided me an insight of what nurses actually do and how to do it.” Mrs Tuck stated, “We would definitely go again, it was a great introduction to the PSU program and provided great hands on experience.”
It was a fun filled educational day; the girls got to learn a lot and each gained a little experience and knowledge about nursing and the PSU program.
