  • Taxes done…whew!  Hope you’re getting something back and are pondering how to invest your refunds, remembering all will run out soon.
“The only things certain in life are taxes and death” (Franklin rearranged). Though we fret, tax time comes and goes.  Death’s a one-time deal.
In a fraction of tax-time, we can pen our Durable Power of Attorney and Living Will (DPOA) to record wishes for treatment of serious illness or injury when we are can no longer communicate them.  Hence, today is designated National Healthcare Decisions Day.
Via Christi’s Ethics Committee will discuss advance directives and distribute forms and wallet cards today from 11:00-1:00 in the hospital cafeteria.  Also, find any state’s forms at www.nhdd.org
    Important facts….
    1)     Living will is a simple statement sharing your wish to die naturally, with only medicine and comfort care.
    2)      DPOA names agent(s) to make healthcare decisions when you can’t communicate your wishes.
    3)      Each document (both legal) must be witnessed by two individuals or a notary.
    4)      DPOA is limited to healthcare only, and doesn’t revoke any existing Living Will.
    5)      Upon recovery, you reassume power to choose treatment.
Most important are the conversations with family and loved ones about your end-of life wishes.   There are thousands of reasons to talk about faith, dying and death, health conditions, life sustaining treatments and more --- just as there are thousands of experiences and stories along life’s journey.  What are your reasons?  Share them with those who know you well!
