St. Mary's Colgan running backs and linebackers Christian and Zach Smith made the "8 Wonders of Kansas Football" selected by Kansas Pregame Football Magazine, in the recent high school football season preview.

The Smiths (counted as one selection) join Shawnee Mission East receiver Elliot Faerber (Class 6A), McPherson quarterback Tyler Matthews (Class 5A), Louisburg running back Garrett Griffin (Class 4A), Wichita Collegiate tight end-defensive end-offensive tackle Trace Clark (Class 3A), Madison running back and cornerback Kole Schankie (Eight-Man Division I) and Thunder Ridge running back Joel Struckhoff (Eight-Man Division II).

Louisburg head coach Gary Griffin and Meade head coach Scott Moshier are profiled as "8 Wonders of Kansas Football." The Griffins were also counted as one selection.

Christian Smith gained 1,056 yards and Zach Smith scored 27 touchdowns, helping Colgan advance to last year's Class 2-1A state title game.

Faerber, verbally committed to the University of Illinois, caught 43 passes for 799 yards and seven touchdowns last year. Matthews, verbally committed to TCU, threw for 2,658 yards, 30 touchdowns and three interceptions on 160 of 215 passing. Garrett Griffin ran for nearly 1,600 yards and helped Louisburg to a perfect 14-0 season and its first Class 4A state title.

Clark made 64 tackles (21 solo, 43 assist) and four sacks for the perennial Class 3A power, Collegiate. Schankie ran for over 1,900 yards and an incredible 52 touchdowns to lead Madison to a 2010 state title. Struckhoff totaled 1,779 yards on 200 carries, his third consecutive season with over 1,000 yards rushing.

Kansas Pregame's web partner Kpreps ranked Colgan at No. 2 in the preseason rankings, behind defending champion Meade.

Chanute running back Jared McComb (Class 4A), Galena tight end-linebacker Zach Gougler (Class 3A) and Crest running back Kyle Hammond (Eight-Man Division I) made their respective classifications' "8 Players to Watch."
