One thing that Northeast head track and field coach Piper Richardson was worried about heading into next spring’s track season wasn’t numbers or injuries, but equipment.
Namely hurdles.
So, when the Lon Helm American Legion Post #182 and Ladies Auxiliary approached Northeast Athletic Director Jason Clemensen about what the school may need, he knew immediately what it would be.
That translated into the Legion post and Ladies Auxiliary to put forth a joint fundraising effort that turned into a $1,500 donation presented to the school for the purchase of new hurdles.
“We work very throughout the course of the year with our bingo, spaghetti and Homecoming and we were looking at doing some charitable donations within the community,” said Billie McCloud, of the Legion post in Arma.
So, the Legion and Auxiliary formed a committee and spoke to Clemensen about what the school needed and hurdles was the first thing that came to mind.
“It was awesome that Jason [AD Clemensen] thought that it was a need for us,” Richardson said. “We have to have the equipment and we are very fortunate that the American Legion and the Ladies Auxiliary were dedicated to our kids and athletics.”
The group effort between the Legion and Auxiliary combined to raise the $1,500 that was donated to the school on Tuesday.
“We were trying to do it as a joint effort,” McCloud said. “We wanted to stay in the community and give back. The school district was a good place to start because that is our future.”
That came as a huge relief for Richardson — who hosts a junior high and high school varsity meet during the track and field season.
“We were looking at not having enough to run a track meet and we were fortunate to get the donation for the track team,” Richardson said. “Our old ones I have had for a long time and there is a lot of wear and tear on them.”
McCloud added that the Legion and Ladies Auxiliary are not done with their efforts to provide things for the community of Arma.
“We are planning on doing some other things within the community as well,” McCloud said.
