Pittsburg High senior Amber Kloster finally got her wish.
On Friday, the first day of the KSHSAA State Track & Field Championships at Cessna Stadium in Wichita, Kloster broke the state record in the javelin to win the event in 147 feet, 4 inches.
The old record, set by Newton’s Janae Voelker of Newton, was 146-5.
Jordan Bicknell placed second in the high jump with a leap of 6-4
The Pittsburg High School boys 4x100 relay team of Keenan Soles, Mason Stewart, Connor Menghini and Wesley Slavens will have a shot at a state medal today after qualifying seventh in the event.
The team finished fourth in their heat with a time of 43.85 seconds to move on to today’s finals.
Tyrone Wooden missed qualifying in the 300 hurdles after he had the ninth-best time in the preliminaries at 42.53 seconds. Soles also placed ninth in the long jump in 20-5.75.
The Dragon boys 4x400 team of Luke Lee, Rashawn Davis, Bicknell and Soles qualified fifth for today’s finals.

Class 2A
The St. Mary’s-Colgan girls 4x400 relay team of Faith Miller, Chelsea Duncan, Emmalia White and Hillary Dickey moved on to the finals of the 4x400 relay after a heat-best time of 4 minutes, 11.93 seconds. That was three seconds faster than second-place Sublette.
Dickey qualified for the finals of the girls 400 after turning in the fifth-best time in 1:00.52.
Austin Riggs also qualified in the boys 400 after running a heat time of 49.92 seconds — the second-best of the event. Riggs had a false-start in the preliminaries of the 200 and did not move into the finals.
Northeast’s Jeremy Sullins placed fourth overall in the boys long jump with a leap of 20-feet, 11 inches. That was just 1.25 inches away from event champion, Garrett Breech of Flinthills. Teammate Khristen Dwyer placed 14th in the girls triple jump.
Austin Bogina finished 12th in the 3,200 in 10:37.56.

Class 4A
Girard’s Morgan Boore medaled in the girls long jump after placing sixth with a distance of 16-3. She placed 10th in the triple jump
Johnny Webb just missed qualifying for the finals of the 300 hurdles after finishing with the ninth-best time in 41.38. Webb was just .04 seconds from qualifying for today’s finals. Webb did come back to finish third in the high jump with a leap of 6-6.
Whitney Southard missed qualifying for the finals in the girls 200 after running the preliminaries in 27.048 seconds.
Tyler Polshak finished third in the boys 3,200 with a time of 9:52.03.
The Girard boys sit in fourth overall heading into today’s final competitions.
