  • LEEPER: We need a referee

  • I guess politics has always been a dirty game but it sure seems a lot dirtier lately. I think we need a Referee to call foul plays and give penalties to some in this game of politics.
All games have rules of fair play that need to be respected. We are Americans and we should put all Americans first.
I’m writing this on the night of the Wisconsin recall primaries. You may remember all those demonstrators protesting Wisconsin Republicans first giving so many tax breaks to the wealthy that they created a deficit and then slashing workers’ benefits and attacking union bargaining rights "because of the deficit.”
We even had a demonstration here in Pittsburg showing union solidarity, organized by a PSU student. There were recall petitions filed on 6 of those Republican Congressmen.
Now here’s where the foul play comes in. Republicans put up fake Democrats to run against the real Democrats, forcing a primary, along with other dirty tactics like sending lying letters to voters about procedure. I’m happy to report their tactics have failed and all the real Democrats were elected today.
The recall elections will be held next month. Meanwhile the next dirty tactic will be trying to redistrict their way to a win. The way redistricting is used as a political tool is also a shame and I cry "foul" and "fie upon you" for trying to cheat your way to victory.
That includes Kansas politicians, who will also be redistricting.
I would like to see our Political Referee give penalties to all those candidates who ran last November on "job creation.” This year alone Democrats have proposed over 50 bills to help create jobs, and the Republicans have defeated every single one. Meanwhile they are doing everything EXCEPT work on jobs.
The main thing I hear is Republicans, both at the Federal and State levels, trying to either promote their social agenda or destroy Medicare and Social Security while giving ever more to the rich.
You may have read in this column my support for creating government jobs working on special projects and infrastructure (such as bridges) like FDR did back in the 30's. The President has said Congress must pass these kinds of bills, and that’s not about to happen with our current crop of "leaders.”
I heard a good suggestion this week that we could employ people to bring our public schools’ infrastructure back up to par. Apparently many of our schools need work. However, just this week a Tea Party group stated they want to do away with Public Schools!  A lot of third world countries don’t have public education, let’s not join them.
So unless we want the right wing Republicans to do away with the Minimum Wage, Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, Women’s Rights and Public Education, I think we are all going to have to use our vote to become the referees of those who are playing dirty politics.
Page 2 of 2 - Don’t let the rascals get away with saying one thing and then doing another. Let’s hold them accountable. Tell them we want to see them playing by the rules and doing some honest work on the real issues, like jobs and helping all the American people.
