  • St. Mary’s Colgan starting pitchers Christian Cedeno and V.J. Piccini combined to allow two runs on six hits during their complete game wins Thursday night against the Southeast Lancers at JayCee Ballpark.
Cedeno allowed one run on four hits and Piccini one run on two hits with the defense behind them committing a total of two errors over 12 innings during a 3-1 and 11-1 sweep of their Crawford-Neosho-Cherokee League rivals.
“I thought on the mound we were very good again today,” Colgan head coach Mike Watt said. “V.J. and Christian were both sharp, pitched well and they gave us what we hope to get out of them all the time, an opportunity to win and that’s what they did.”
After the first inning, in which both teams scored all their runs, pitchers Cedeno and Southeast senior Jason Reed were sharp as glass and worked fast enough the seven-inning game was over in under 2 hours.
Southeast managed its only run on a Bryan Horgan infield single and Reed RBI single after Horgan moved into scoring position on a wild pitch.
In their half of the first, the Panthers answered with three runs on four hits.
Leadoff man Nate Grimaldi started the rally with a single, then stole two bases before No. 3 man Cedeno drove him in with a RBI double. Both Cedenos, Christian and Ryan, scored on a two-run bloop single by Drew Dawson.
The Panthers left two runners on and this developed into a theme for the Panthers the final six innings, totaling nine runners left behind.
After that first inning, both teams combined for six additional hits, two by Southeast and four by Colgan. Reed and Cedeno each pitched their way out of any sticky situations.
Colgan jumped all over Southeast in the nightcap, scoring eight runs in the first two innings on a combination of six hits and six Southeast errors. Ryan Cedeno and Colton Gilbert picked up RBI singles and Piccini led off the second with a double into the right center gap.
Ryan Cedeno finished off the game with a walk-off single in the fifth, scoring Gilbert.
“We were more aggressive in the second game but give Reed a lot of credit,” Watt said. “I thought he threw really well. We had eight hits in the first game but we couldn’t string them together. The second game, we were able to string some hits together and they helped us a little bit with some errors defensively. We were able to score and put up some runs faster. Overall, it was a good doubleheader, two good wins and moving onto Riverton.”
Colgan improved to 10-5 on the season.
    SOFTBALL
Southeast improved to 9-2 on the season with a 10-6 and 9-3 sweep of Colgan on Thursday.
Page 2 of 3 - Tessa Robin and Alex Yeoman led a 15-hit Lancer attack with a combined seven, Robin four and Yeoman three. Kalee Ewbank and Olivia Powell each drove in a pair of runs and the Lancers used a pair of four-run innings to outscore the Panthers.
Extra-base hits were resoundingly in Southeast’s favor with Yeoman smacking two doubles, Tori Colvin and Ewbank each accounting for a double and Robin hitting a triple.
Abbie O’Brien led Colgan with a 3-for-4 opener at the plate and pitcher Ali Noyes supported herself with a triple.
In the nightcap, Southeast jumped out with six first-inning runs and of their 11 hits in the contest, the Lancers deposited seven extra-base hits.
Yeoman again proved dangerous at the plate, blasting two home runs and hitting a double. She totaled five extra-base hits on the evening.
Yeoman led the Lancers with three RBI. Ewbank and Rylie Dainty picked up two RBI apiece with Miri Gordon adding one.
Ewbank hit two doubles and Colvin, Dainty and Yeoman added one each.
“We had girls, my goodness, 3-for-4s and 4-for-5s,” Southeast head coach Mike Bowman said. “Alex Yeoman had a big game with back-to-back home runs. She had a great night. I was real pleased. They all hit the ball hard.”
For the home team, Katie Kolarik fell a homer short of the cycle as she hit a single, a double and a triple. Katelyn Flood went 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles and Amanda McBride went 2-3 with a single and a double.
Southeast plays doubleheaders next week against Girard and Frontenac, Girard on Monday and Frontenac on Thursday. The Lancers make up a game with Baxter Springs on Wednesday.
“They’re looking good,” Bowman said of the Lancers. “Next week is the two toughest teams we play (Girard, Frontenac). Hopefully, we can keep it rolling.”
