Arcadia friends learned that Madeline Cunningham Braun died April 16, 2013. The daughter of Harry and Pearl (Scott) Cunningham, she was born and  raised in Oskaloosa, Mo. Her parents ran a plant nursery in Oskaloosa when their daughter was a child. At one time the family took a trip to some of the western states. While walking along, Madeline slipped and fell down a ravine. Her father proceeded to climb down the ravine and rescued her, getting her back to safety. In doing so, he fell to his death. At Cunningham’s funeral service, the pastor, G.W. Corporon, quoted the scripture, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”
JOY Sunday School Class held its 57th annual birthday dinner April 16 at El Charro’s in Fort Scott. Vera Parrish, secretary, read a history of the class. JOY Class started in 1956 when it was organized  at the request of a mother in the church who wanted her soon-to-be-married daughter and husband to have a class to attend that was made up of  younger people. The class first met in the kitchen of the bungalow, but soon grew in number and moved to the larger room. There have only been three full-time teachers during its 57 years. They are Lula Garton, Emory Briggs and Gary  Peterson. The class continues to help Learning and Teaching Ministries and Campus Christians every month; packed cookies for the elderly at Christmas; gave $50 to Jace and Jessie Paulick when they went to Germany; gave $50 to the Santa fund; gave $50 to Scott Ball to help with his traveling expenses to the World Special Olympics Games; gave $20 to Chris Brooks so he could call his children; helped with the Easter breakfast; had a women’s retreat; and sends cards and makes calls. Patty Peterson serves as president again and again. Wayne and Christie Parrish bring brownies and cookies to meetings. Those attending the birthday dinner were John and Vera Parrish, Charles and Willa Cable, Cathy Allen, Scott Ball, Joyce Stephens, Michelle Castro, Patty and Gary Peterson, Betty Dehn, Evelyn Bryant, John and Judy Rawlings, Lynetta Fisher, Leora Younge, Larry Shead and Mary V. Shead. Wayne and Christie Parrish were unable to attend because of the ill health of  her mother.
An adoption shower for the Stansburys will be held at 2 p.m. at the Arcadia Community Center.
