  • Southeast Kansas Humane Society is conducting its 10th annual Adopt-A-Thon.
During the three-day event, which started Friday and will continue today and Sunday, the society’s animal shelter will offer discounted adoption fees. Dog adoptions will be reduced to $35, and cat adoptions reduced to $20. Hours will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday.
Refreshments will be served to guests today and Sunday.
“I know the weather may not be that great, but we’re hoping for a good turn-out and that lots of animals will find their forever homes,” said Erica Wilson, Humane Society promotions director.
Visitors will have a wide range of animals to choose from.
“We have 90 dogs and 50 cats, including kittens and dogs under a year old, adult cats and dogs and some seniors as well,” Wilson said. “The age for senior pets starts at eight years for a cat and seven years for a dog.”
While many people enjoy having a lively, playful kitten or puppy, Wilson said that anyone wanting a pet more settled down might think about adopting a senior.
She said that the shelter usually runs at full capacity, and the situation will soon be even more challenging.
“We always get a lot of puppies and kittens in the spring,” Wilson said. “We’ve had kittens and puppies dumped off here that we’ve had to bottle feed.”
The solution to the birth of unwanted litters, she said, is the spaying or neutering of pets.
“Our sister program, Pawprints on the Heartland, does a great job with its spay/neuter van,” Wilson said.
Adoption fees cover spay/neuter surgeries and basic shots for pets adopted from the shelter. General operating expenses are funded through fundraisers such as the society’s annual chili feed, bake sales, etc., donations, memorials and the occasional grant.
Shelter hours are from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday. The shelter is located 2 1/4 miles west of 20th Street and the U.S. 69 Bypass. Anyone needing additional information may call 620-232-1840.
