At the founding of our nation most people were farmers, bankers, lawyers, merchants, craftsmen, sailors, trappers, hunters, slaves, bond-servants and apprentices. Even then, excepting slaves, many had failed at one or more of these endeavors. Some of them could move on and try again, but many were incapable and preyed on society, becoming thieves, con-men and politicians. The Tea Party and its advocates, the libertarian wing of the Republican Party, believe we can and should return to the “good old days”. Unless you or your family were wealthy it may not be as easy as they think. Just try to buy enough land to farm, start a bank or start a mercantile store and compete with Wal-mart and Home Depot. They dislike “big government” except when it benefits them, like Social Security and Medicare. The young believe they will all be successful and haven’t any need for Social Security. Some won’t. Many will. There are many jobs working for companies or individuals, but most wouldn’t enable workers to provide security in their old age. If you are driven, willing to sacrifice years to study and willing to go in debt for years you can become a professional person. You may become self-sufficient and able to provide for your “golden years”. If some of us didn’t have a union, company or government pension, Social Security, Medicare and even Medicaid we might be living in my sons basement. Oh my God!! Well, not everyone. I’ll let you guess what he would say.
