Thumbs up... to the dedication of the new Student Recreation Center and Armory at Pittsburg State University Saturday. The Armory presents a much-needed upgrade over the facility located at 1506 N. Walnut, while the Recreation Center gives students a nearby option to practice healthy choices. Students majoring in recreational studies now also have a brand new facility and top flight equipment to work with.
Thumbs down... to the departure of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Wichita from St. Mary’s-Colgan schools. The Sisters were called into town to operate the elementary school in 1895 and have served here ever since, with more than 200 nuns serving in the parish. The Sisters served as principals of the high school from its opening in 1936 until 1973. Now, they will be headed Wichita, bringing, as Pat Forbes called it, “the end of an era.”
Thumbs up... to Pittsburg State for setting yet another enrollment record. It seems that every year the university sets another record for enrollment, and this year was no different. Among the highlights are the largest freshman class since 1965 and the biggest junior and senior classes ever. Perhaps even more impressive are the 500 international students coming to PSU from 40 different countries.
Thumbs down ... to Charles D. Adams/Dwight Fleming/Charles Fleming/Dwight F. Saint. He has reportedly scammed multiple businesses with a false advertising scheme and has ended up with more than $6,000 businesses around the four states region. A lot of preparation went into his scam, and a lot of preparation will go into finding him, as well.
