Reverend Russell M. Buck, 79, of Girard, passed away at 10:03 a.m. Saturday, May 23, 2009 at the Girard Medical Center.


Rev. Buck was born August 20, 1929 at Sutherland, Nebraska, to Emsley Milton and Mary Katherine Buck. As a young man, Russell worked farms and rodeos in Nebraska before joining the United States Navy, where he served on the destroyer U.S.S. Agriholms. During his Navy years, Russell took up boxing and continued with the Golden Gloves Boxing Team for several years after leaving the service. Russell worked in Liberal, Kansas for Panhandle Eastern Pipeline while being owner and operator of Russell’s Tree Service. Rev. Buck had been a quadriplegic stemming from an accident in his tree business in 1975. He moved to Pittsburg, to be near his son Russell W. Buck.


It was in Pittsburg where he met and married his wife, Janey on February 14, 1987 at Victory Life Center in Pittsburg. They owned and operated R & J Tree Service for several years. On November 9, 1997, Russell was ordained as a minister.


He is survived by his wife, Janey of the home; Russell and Nancy Buck of Apache, OK; Linda and Larry Doll of Lawton, OK; James and Barbara Cummins, Jr of McCune, KS; and Charles M. Cummins of Pittsburg; He is also survived by two brothers, and three sisters: Dr. Marvin and Jan Buck of Springville, TN; Ethel Grant of Liberal, KS; Kenneth and Kay Buck of Liberal, KS; Delcia Lungren of Winfield, KS; and Patricia and Joe Dondlinger, of Nesbitt, TN. His grandchildren: Jeremy Doll of Addison, TX; Christopher and Melody Doll of Irving, TX; Jason Doll of Grapevine, TX; Melissa Buck of Lawton, OK; Michelle Stallings of Apache, OK; Terry Grissom, of Lawton, OK; Michael, Jaymee, Jerri and Ty Cummins of McCune; Drew and Landon Cummins of Pittsburg; Matthew Cummins of S. Florida; Christina Cummins of Tulsa, OK; and Amanda Green of Washington state. Rev. Buck is also survived by three great-grandsons, three great-granddaughters along with many nieces and nephews and lots of wonderful friends.


Russell was preceded in death by both of his parents and two sons, Ronald L. Cummins and Jeffrey Cummins.


Services will be 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at the Brenner Mortuary with Pastor Jamie Tickel officiating. The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m. today (Tuesday) at the Brenner Mortuary, where friends may call after 1 p.m. today (Tuesday). Burial will be in National Cemetery at Fort Scott, KS. The family suggests memorials to the Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch in Texas.
