Baxter Springs native Caleb Williamson got his game at the right time for Emporia State.

The right fielder hit a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the third to give the Hornets the lead for good as they topped Mesa (Colo.) State in the Division II Baseball Championship on Monday night at the USA Baseball Training Complex.

The Hornets (48-13) had to rally from an early 2-1 deficit to pull out the 5-2 win. They will play again against one of the four teams in from the other half of the bracket at 2 p.m. Thursday.

ESU got on the board in the first inning as senior CF Conner Crumbliss scored on a single through the right side by junior 1B Kenny Burkhead.

After failing to score in the top of the first after loading the bases, the Mavericks (44-14) touched the ESU starter, senior LHP Tyler Applehans — from Fredonia — for a pair of runs in the second. A two-out double down the leftfield line by Kevin Becker, just out of the diving reach of junior LF Jeremy Francis, gave MSC the lead.

Junior RHP Ben Graham (8-3) relieved Applehans after a wild pitch during a walk to Andrew Martinez put runners at the corners. After loading the bases with a walk to Mike Provencher, Graham got Matt Bodenchuk looking to escape further damage.

ESU bounced back in the bottom of the third with a two-out, two-run double from senior RF Caleb Williamson to regain the lead for good. It scored sophomore SS Andy Cotton and Burkhead, who drew walks from Mesa State starter Chris Carma (7-4).

The Hornets scratched across single runs in the fourth and seventh innings -- sophomore 2B Jacob White doubled home senior C Mike Sharp in the fourth, then Sharp drove home Burkhead with a two-out single to left.

ESU has scored 33 runs with two outs in the postseason with the three runs in this contest.

Meanwhile, Graham and senior pitcher Diego Soto held the most potent offense in Division II to only four hits through the final seven innings. Soto threw the ninth for his 12th save. Graham finished game with five strikeouts as Soto added two. The Hornet bullpen has not allowed a run in 10.1 innings pitched in this tournament.

Williamson finished 4-for-4 with his two runs driven in. Burkhead went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI. Sharp also was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a run driven in.
