  • The Pittsburg State University Baja SAE team placed seventh overall out of 88 teams competing in April at Auburn University in Alabama. As a result, team advisor Trent Lindbloom is now bald.
Jake Lampe, Gorilla Racing team president, and Jeff Vondemkamp, captain, shaved his head in the Weede Physical Education Building parking lot Friday evening after receiving their bachelor of science in technology degrees.
The ritual dated back to a bet made in 1991.
“We started Mini Baja in 1991, and Trent was on the first time,” said Dr. Roger Adams said. “We got a rude awakening when we showed up at Milwaukee.”
The bet was made then that if the Gorilla Racing team ever placed in the top 10 overall at a race, team members could shave the adviser’s head.  Eventually, Lindbloom became a faculty member and team adviser, and carried on the bet.
“It’s taken that long for one of us to get his head shaved,” Adams said. “I’m glad it was Trent and not me.”
Vondemkamp said that in addition to placing seventh overall at Auburn, Gorilla Racing also placed third in the grueling endurance race.
“Then we went to Portland, Ore., and got fourth in endurance and 11th overall,” he said. “This is the best the school has ever done.”
Vondemkamp thanked Lindbloom for everything he had done.
“We were along for the ride,” Lindbloom said.
The advisor said that he had technically canceled the bet.
“But I couldn’t renege  on these guys,” Lindbloom said. “They’ve been with me for four years.”
He wasn’t too upset about being bald for a while.
“I will be wearing a do-rag,” Lindbloom said.
