  • Pittsburg juniors Hank Cloninger and Sarah Jewett both finished in the top 5 Thursday at the Southeast Kansas League cross country meet.

  • Pittsburg juniors Hank Cloninger and Sarah Jewett both finished in the top 5 Thursday at the Southeast Kansas League cross country meet.
    Cloninger led the PHS boys with a fourth-place time of 17 minutes, 56 seconds in the 5K race. Braden Brown finished eighth (18:22), Jeremiah Jones 12th (18:59), Josh Allmon 25th (21:33) and Garrett Harmon 26th (21:34). Pittsburg finished with 68 points.
    Labette County placed five runners in the first nine and all seven Labette runners finished at least 19th. Labette seniors Drew Baum and David Geren, familiar names at or near the top of every race, finished 1-2 — Baum establishing the pace at 16:59 and Geren not far behind at 17:18. George Langston and Seth Blackburn finished 5-6 in 18:14 and 18:15, respectively. Cord Hall took ninth (18:43), Mitchell Kelly 14th (19:26) and Jared Hawks 19th (19:55). Labette blew away the field with 22 points.
    On the girls side, Jewett placed fifth in 16:36 and Ashlee Beitzinger finished 11th (17:40), Allie Foresman 20th (19:10), Emma Stalnaker 25th (20:10), Sabrina Jones 28th (22:20) and Jordan Redd 29th (24:32).
    The top six individual runners and 8 of the top 10 runners are underclassmen with six juniors, one sophomore and one freshman.
    Katren Reinbolt of Fort Scott — the only runner for the Tigers — won the SEK with a time of 15:12, 33 seconds faster than runner-up Michaela Ozier of Labette County and 57 seconds faster than Madison Dispensa of Chanute.

    Team results, varsity girls:  Chanute 29, Independence 52, Pittsburg 76, Labette County 79.
