Pittsburg State won its home opener 5-1 over Sioux Falls and made it a clean doubleheader sweep with a 3-0 win Monday afternoon at Al Ortolani Field.

In the opener, left-handed junior college transfer (Allen County Community College, Iola) Matt Stalcup pitched a five-hitter, allowing one run over seven innings. Stalcup fanned 12 batters — including three in the second — and gave up his only run in the seventh after Pitt State staked a 5-0 lead with three runs in the first, one in the fifth and one in the sixth.

In the second game, three Pitt State pitchers combined for a five-hit shutout. Jake Stevenson earned his first win of the season with five shutout innings, Jake Moore retired the Cougars 1-2-3 in the sixth and Caleb Gress earned his first save in the seventh.

Pitt State committed no errors over 14 innings.

The Gorillas built a 3-0 lead in the first game with five consecutive first-inning hits — Ryan Ventura singled, Chase Barnes singled, Brad Foss singled with a perfect bunt up the third base line and loaded the bases, Ryan Reddick singled to score Ventura and Matt Garcia doubled home Barnes and Foss.

Pitt State shortstop Evan Thomas enjoyed a good day. In the first game, he doubled and scored in the sixth. In the second game, he drove home two runs with a double in the second inning and later scored a run in the fifth.

The Gorillas even their record at 2-2 after being swept by Rogers State and host MIAA foe Lincoln for two days of doubleheaders at Al Ortolani Field, Saturday and Sunday. Saturday play starts at 1 p.m. and Sunday 12 p.m.
