  • Just days before his inauguration as Kansas governor, Sam Brownback has started lining out his own staff.
On Thursday, Brownback, who officially takes office on Monday, Jan. 10, named five people to serve in the Governor’s office.
Kim Borchers, Denise Coatney, Shawn Cowing, Jon Hummell and Sherriene Jones-Sontag were all named to Brownback’s staff.
Borchers will become Brownback’s Director of Appointments. The position will manage the application and hiring process for the Brownback Administration for positions as well as for state boards and committees.
Currently, Borchers manages the hiring process for state agencies with Brownback’s transition team and was the Strategic Grassroots Director for Brownback’s gubernatorial campaign.
Coatney was named to be Brownback’s Director of Scheduling and will manage the Governor’s daily schedule of travel, meetings and appointments. She has served as Brownback’s scheduler since 1986, when Brownback was Kansas Secretary of Agriculture.
As Brownback’s Director of Constituent Services, Cowing will handle casework and advocacy for constituents that contact the Governor’s office. Cowing was Brownback’s U.S. Senate Constituent Services Director.
Hummell has been hired to be the Administration Director of Operations. The position oversees the daily logistical operations within the office of the Governor. Hummell was previously Brownback’s U.S. Senate regional director.
Jones-Sontag will be the Communications Director and Press Secretary for the Governor’s office. She has previously served in the same position with Brownback’s campaign for Governor as well as with the transition team.
"Kim, Denise, Shawn, Jon, and Sherriene have been trusted advisers, with a passion for serving the people of the Kansas. I have full confidence that they will each perform his or her duties with excellence and grace," Brownback said in a statement.
