Scoring first was the key in the Senior Babe Ruth doubleheader between Arma and Frontenac played Wednesday evening at Mike Falletti Field.

In the first game, Frontenac scored eight first-inning runs en route to a 16-6 run-rule win and Arma scored three first-inning runs on its way to a 13-5 win in the second game.

“We started off hot the first game,” Frontenac manager Steve Wade said. “We took advantage of a couple breaks and scored on them.”

Arma made eight total errors in Game 1 — three in the first, one in the second, one in the third and three in the fifth.

“It was (a struggle) from the get-go,” Arma manager Jason Clemensen said. “We drop a ball between our pitcher and catcher, we drop one at third and we dropped a couple in left. We did a great job of battling back, but we were chasing too many early.”

Frontenac outfielder Gus Brunetti drove in two runs with a third-inning triple into the right field corner and Bryce Burdette tripled leading off the fifth; Burdette then scored on a Bryan Wade single.

Arma scored two runs in the fourth and four in the fifth to avoid being run-ruled sooner.

The heart of the Arma order came through in the fourth with two outs — Cole Scott doubled, followed by a Chase Cleland triple scoring Scott and a Joey Claffey single plating Cleland. Scott drove in two (Zach Lovell, Guillermo Rojo) with a fifth-inning double, again with two outs.

“The thing about summer ball, everybody’s a little more relaxed than high school ball and it’s hard to keep focused,” Steve Wade said. “We did not do a very good job of focusing tonight. Arma got back in the first game and made it a little tighter. Because they got on a roll late that first game, they came out that second game and put it to us.”

Arma swung huge bats in the second game. In the first inning, Scott tripled home Zach Lovell and Guillermo Rojo. With two outs, Josh Tingley singled home Cleland and Claffey, giving Arma a 5-2 lead. After Frontenac cut the game to 5-4, Arma responded with four runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth to build a 13-5 lead — Cleland tripled home Scott in the fourth and Rojo hit a two-run triple in the fifth.

“That’s been us lately,” Clemensen said. “We struggle in the first game for some reason.

But the second game, we had some momentum and got some guys on base early. We were able to drive them in and Joey (Claffey) did a great job on the mound for us tonight.”

Frontenac used five pitchers in the second game, three of them after the home team cut the lead to 5-4.

“They answered it and got back up,” Steve Wade said. “No excuses, but we just flat-out ran out of pitching. They hit the ball really well and chased some of our pitchers. That’s a good-hitting ball team.”

Clemensen brought in Rojo to subdue a fourth-inning Frontenac rally, then he struck out Frontenac 1-2-3 to close the door in the fifth inning. Rojo struck out four in 1.2 innings.

“We went to Guillermo (Rojo) and in that situation, I want to go with my best,” Clemensen said. “He came in and shut them down.”
