  • Dr. Riaz Baqir killed in car crash

  • Riaz Baqir, MD, a member of the Via Christi Heart and Vascular Center Staff since 2009, died Monday afternoon at the University of Kansas Hospital from injuries suffered in a car crash in the morning near Pleasanton.

  • Riaz Baqir, MD, a member of the Via Christi Heart and Vascular Center Staff since 2009, died Monday afternoon at the University of Kansas Hospital from injuries suffered in a car crash in the morning near Pleasanton.
    Dr. Baqir, 66, was board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He was a Fellow of the American Board of Cardiology and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.
    Hospital staff said that Dr. Baqir helped  save lives in the community through the excellent care he provided.
    “More importantly than his clinical expertise, Dr. Baqir is remembered for his kindness and the way he treated people,” said Randy Cason, Via Christi Hospital  senior administrator. “He always made you smile whenever, and wherever, you saw him.”
    “He was a good friend,” added Wes McDaniel, Via  Christi Heart and Vascular Center director. “A good friend, a good teacher and a good mentor.”
    Born Nov. 1, 1946, Dr. Baqir was a 1970 graduate of the Dhaka Medical College in Bangladesh. He did his residency and received training at the Brooklyn  Hospital and Metropolitan Hospital.
    A memorial service for Dr. Baqir will be held in the near future in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Chapel.
