VJ Piccini scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch and Pizza Hut was able to hold on to a 6-5 come-from-behind win over KTCCU in Don Gutteridge League play Wednesday.
Pizza Hut battled back from a 5-2 deficit to score four runs in the fifth and sixth innings for the win at Mike Faletti Field in Frontenac.
“We just got lucky, but the kids really battled,” said Pizza Hut head coach John Macary.
Pizza Hut was helped with a strong defensive grab by third baseman Ross Edge that put two outs on the board in the bottom of the sixth for KTCCU, trailing 6-5 and threatening.
Edge was playing a bunt on the prior pitch, but moved back to cover third when he caught the lineout from Charley Hensley.
“We felt that they hadn’t bunted yet and we were just playing a hunch,” Macary said of Edge playing the bunt. “After that, we thought that he would swing away.”
It was that play that might have been the dagger in the heart of KTCCU as they failed to put the tying run across.
“I kind of feel like a broken record,” said KTCCU head coach Jerry Standlee. “It is all mental and we have kids that are not making smart decisions.”
KTCCU was unable to score a run in the final two innings and could not advance a runner past second in the fifth and sixth.
“We were in a nice situation with the top of the lineup and we could not get the runs across,” Standlee said.
Pizza Hut, after having relatively quiet bats in the five innings previous, rapped out three runs and were helped with a dropped third strike that was misplayed and allowed Piccini to reach first, representing the tying run.
Anthony McNeely later scored Edge on an RBI and Piccini scored the go-ahead on a wild pitch.
It was KTCCU that jumped out first after Ryan Russian belted a two-run single to left field in the first inning to put his squad up 2-0.
Pizza Hut was able to tie the game in the top of the third when Piccini hit an RBI single to right to score Trey Lewandowski and later scored on a wild pitch.
Markel White scored Dakota Buckner in the bottom of the third with a triple that rolled to the left-field fence which put KTCCU up 3-2.
That lead was compounded in the fourth with a two-run single by Charley Hensley.
Then, Pizza Hut started to make a charge.
In the fifth, Chase Cleland scored Piccini on a groundout to second, closing the gap before the strong sixth inning.
“This was just a big win for us because we have just one league game left on Tuesday before the tournament,” Macary said.
