Lair, program director for New Hope Services, started a local Special Olympics team in 2001 that has grown to become "the best in the state," according to a statement on the Royals' Web site. A past recipient of the Kansas Volunteer of the Year award, Lair was selected by the Royals as a Buck O'Neil Legacy Seat honoree in 2007.
Lair will be honored during the pre-game ceremony at the 2009 MLB All-Star Game in St. Louis on July 14 on FOX, at which President Barack Obama will throw out the ceremonial first pitch.
