John VanGorden may be at the head of the city, but he was quick to deflect any credit for the city's "Paint the Town Red" display competition win on Friday.
"It really was from all of the departments," he said. "It was a unified effort. All of the departments participated."
The city, with an impressive display at City Hall, won first place in the Division 1 competition, which includes businesses with more than 15 employees. Watco Companies finished second and Golden LivingCenter finished third.
In Division 2, for businesses with between eight and 15 employees, Citizen's Bank earned the top spot, with M&I Bank and Mazzio's earning second and third place, respectively.
Loree's Bridal and Formal won first place in Division 3, the contest for businesses with fewer than eight employees. There was a tie for second-place between Sweet Designs and Everything Sew Sew. Third place went to Celebrations by Lori.
According to the Pittsburg Area Chamber of Commerce, approximately 60 businesses entered this year's contest. The displays were judged on the use of the colors crimson and gold, originality, durability and spirit. Blake Benson, Chamber president, said he was impressed by the level of competition this year.
"It seemed like this year, people really stepped it up a notch with the displays," he said. "It just seemed like the creativity really blew us away this year. People here love Pittsburg State and this is a great way to let them show it."
VanGorden said that while his business was one of this year's winner, the entire city should be proud of its efforts.
"We had fun and enjoyed ourselves," he said. "We're glad we won, but I know there were a lot of good entries in the competition. Just trying to support PSU is a great thing, and you could see that up and down Broadway all week."
Display contest winners earned the rights to a traveling trophy, as well as PSU merchandise and football tickets.
