LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Preliminary figures indicate that more than 1,000 students have enrolled in the Lawrence Virtual School for the current academic year.

The school says 1,125 students enrolled in kindergarten through eighth grade. The school discontinued its high school program this year because of a lack of students last year.

Principal Gary Lewis says more than 580 of the students are new this year.

Only 90 of the students live in Douglas County and only 13 live in Lawrence, with the rest spread across the state.

Lewis says the students are evenly distributed throughout the various grades.

The school has also renewed its charter with the state for another five years.
