Thumbs up, thumbs down...

Thumbs up... to all involved with putting together the Community Thanksgiving. It’s a wonderful event that truly shows how this community can unite to serve others.

Thumbs down... to North Korea for attacking a South Korean island. Turmoil on the Korean peninsula has never been resolved, and little can be solved by trying to reignite the powder keg that exists between the Koreas.

Thumbs up... to Northeast High School senior Chelsea Hayes, for winning first place in the “Kansas Don’t Spoil It” calendar contest.

Thumbs down...to the Girard pool, which is in severe need of repairs. Divers found more than 100 structural issues, so severe that the original company will not be able to repair the problems.

Thumbs up... to Cathy Lee Arcuino with Pittsburg State for again hosting international students for a Thanksgiving dinner. These students may not have anywhere to go for the American tradition of Thanksgiving, and all those involved in the dinner should be commended for introducing international students to the family atmosphere of Thanksgiving.

Thumbs down...to GOP senators holding up the passage of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START). The agreement, which has support from the U.S. military leaders and all 27 NATO allies, is designed to reduce the nuclear arsenals of Russia and the U.S. by 30 percent.

Thumbs up... to the Transportation Security Administration for attempting to keep travel safer with new methods and means of searching. If the new methods protect even one terrorist attack, it’s worth it. However...

Thumbs down... to U.S. Marshals in Orlando, Fla., for admitting to saving thousands of body scan images. Also, thumbs down to increasingly invasive patdowns. There must be some happy medium between security and personal privacy.

Thumbs up... to Pittsburg State track head coach Russ Jewett for being named MIAA Coach of the Year.

Thumbs up... to the St. Mary’s Colgan football team for making the state title game. Good luck in the championship game.
