Robert “Bob” Townsend, 92, of Farlington, died at 7:12 p.m., Monday, April 26, 2010 in the Girard Medical Center.

Robert “Bob” Townsend, 92, of Farlington, died at 7:12 p.m., Monday, April 26, 2010 in the Girard Medical Center.

He was born January 30, 1918 in Girard, a son of Marion Edward and Bertha A. (Thompson) Townsend.  He attended Girard Schools.

He served in the US Army during W.W. II during the occupation of Japan.

He married Pauline Bever in 1937 in Farlington.  She preceded him in death.

He married Margaret J. Hanshaw on July 2, 1975 in Miami, Oklahoma.  She survives of the home.

He worked for over 40 years at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant in Parsons as assistant and fire chief.  He was also a farmer and stockman at rural Farlington.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Farlington, a past Sunday school teacher, a former member of the church board, and past church treasurer.  He was a past member of the Farlington School Board and the Farlington Lakers baseball team.  He helped in the organization of and provided the land for the Farlington Fire Department. 
He was the first coach and helped to organize the Little League Baseball Program in Farlington and later he coached baseball in Girard.  He was a past 4-H project leader.   He was a member of the George C. Brown Post No. 26, American Legion of Girard.
He enjoyed his family, attending sporting events of family and friends, visiting with family and friends, and gardening.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, Margaret, of the home, are sons Robert E. Townsend of Girard and Brian E. Townsend and Karis of Cedar Falls, Iowa; a daughter, Marian Joan Smith and Nels of Mapleton, Kansas; grandchildren Kelley L. Saia, Amy L. Townsend, Rob A. Townsend, Katharine R. Stegen, Charlotte Anne Hollomon, Mark N. Smith, Stacey J. Kline, Reese E. Townsend, and Jordan D. Townsend; sixteen great-grandchildren and eleven great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by brothers Hiram “Hi” and William Townsend.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Farlington with Rev. Steve Cole officiating. 

Burial will be in the Farlington Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by the George C. Brown Post No. 26, American Legion of Girard. 

The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:00 p.m., Friday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard where friends may call after 2:00 p.m., Thursday.

Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church in Farlington or the Sherman Township Fire Department and these may be left at the church or the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, 518 W St. John, Box 258, Girard, 66743.
