  • Five forensics students competed at the State Festival for one-act plays in “The Grip of Fate” and earned a 1 rating for their performance.
Students will present the play and an additional 10-minute play, “Midnite,” to the community Friday, May 10, and Saturday, May 11, at 7 p.m. in Shireman Auditorium. Admission is $2.
GHS Special Education instructor Brian Walrod rewrote a play adaption of W.W. Jacob’s short story “The Monkey’s Paw” to fit the one-act requirements for forensics.
Cast members of “The Grip of Fate” include Jarred Mellish as Mr. White; Carley Bradshaw, Mrs. White; Kalibe Smith, Herbert White; Travis Shank, Sergeant Morris; and Graham Dixon, Sampson.
The cast competed at a one-act competition held at Iola where they placed third out of six plays.
At Marmaton Valley’s tournament they placed first out of four plays, which qualified them for State Festival.
State Festival for one-act plays was held in Kansas City Friday, May 3, and the GHS team received a 1 rating there.
Unlike other forensics competitions, one-act play competitors do not compete against other schools. Instead, they receive a rating and feedback from a judge.
Regarding the process, Mr. Walrod said, “You’re going against yourselves and hoping for a 1 rating, which is superior.”
Mr. Walrod also adapted a short story by Rose Blackwood for the play “Midnite.” That cast includes Kalibe Smith as Draven, Whitney West as Rebecca, and Heather Armstrong as Christina.
