  • Nicholas Kellum, Baxter Springs, has been awarded a Critical Language Scholarship to fund overseas study this summer.
A University of Kansas junior, Kellum will study Arabic in his host country of Oman.
The CLS Program, a U.S. Department of State program, is part of a U.S. government effort to expand dramatically the number of Americans studying and mastering critical foreign languages. It provides fully funded, group-based summer intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences.
The program is highly competitive, with nearly 5,000 applicants for the approximately 600 scholarships available for summer 2013.
Kellum previously received a Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship in the amount of $15,000 for the 2013-2014 academic year. An honor roll student, he is scheduled to graduate from KU in 2014 with a degree in global and international studies.
