The Truman State Bulldogs committed six errors during a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader Saturday against Pittsburg State at the Truman Softball Park.
The Bulldogs were blessed to come out with a split, as Pitt State dropped the first game 11-2 and won the second 9-2.
In the second game, the Gorillas delivered the big hits that went missing in the first against Truman State ace Hannah Washburn. The Bulldogs went ahead 1-0 on a Kristin Grossman RBI single but the Gorillas scored nine unanswered on Truman pitchers Kindra Henze and Kirsten Krause.
The Gorilla offensive explosion started in the third with freshman shortstop Jordan Bradshaw, who connected with her third home run on this two-day, four-game conference road trip. She hit a three-run homer Friday against Lindenwood and one-upped herself with a grand slam Saturday.
Bradshaw later hit a RBI single for her fifth RBI of the contest. Her 2-for-4 performance at the plate resulted in five runs.
Tiffany Brown added insurance runs with a two-run homer in the sixth and a RBI single in the seventh on reliever Krause.
Freshmen pitchers Kyndel Shelburn and Kylie Harpst combined to allow two runs on six hits, each allowing one run on three hits. Shelburn pitched the first six innings and picked up her sixth victory of the season in nine decisions.
Pitt State belted 13 hits with five multi-hit games — Samantha Grove and Kayla Sears three hits, and Bradshaw, Brown and Brenna George two.
Considering her recent play, Kreslee Ketcham had an aberration: 0-5 at the plate, ending a eight-game hitting streak. She had three straight 4-4 games this week — against Winona State and Lindenwood, coming one hit short of tying a PSU record of 13 consecutive at-bats with a hit.
With nine RBI against Lindenwood and Truman State, Bradshaw surpassed 20 RBI on the season and now four Gorillas have at least 20 — Brown 25, Bradshaw 23, Ketcham 20 and Katelyn Birchfield 20.
Brown leads the Gorillas with eight homers, followed by Ketcham with seven, Bradshaw six and Birchfield five. The Gorillas have outhomered their opponents 33-11 in outscoring them 163-89.
In the first game Saturday, Truman State benefited from the big hits.
With two down in the first, Cate Simon gave the host a 4-0 lead with a grand slam. Pitt State left the bases loaded in the top half of the first.
Truman State had two runners thrown out at home — pitcher Haleigh Sills threw out Corey Nisbitt in the second and third baseman Birchfield threw out Meredith Kusky in the third — and made three errors but hits like the Simon grand slam and a Kelsey Bollman three-run homer nullified the miscues. Truman led 11-0.
Page 2 of 2 - The Gorillas struggled against Washburn, mustering six hits (none extra-base) on a pitcher who came in Saturday with a 9-2 record and 1.97 ERA, plus 78 strikeouts in 67.2 innings.
Pitt State managed RBI singles from Birchfield and Grove in the fifth but the Gorillas could not avert a run-rule loss.
The road has been friendly to Pitt State this season: 13-5 away from the PSU Softball Complex, 9-4 in official road games and 4-1 in neutral-site games.
The Gorillas (17-9) return to the road Wednesday for nonconference action against the Golden Suns of Arkansas Tech. The Golden Suns, from the Great American Conference, currently own a 16-15 mark.
Pitt State owns a 2-2 record in Arkansas this season, splitting a four-game series with Arkansas-Monticello.
