  • PWC, FYW qualify several for state

  • The Pittsburg Wrestling Club and Frontenac Youth Wrestling performed well Saturday at the USAWKS District 1 Championships.



    Wil and Wes Jameson led four Frontenac Youth state qualifiers with first-place finishes and the PWC earned first-place finishes by Tanner Hitchcock and Tyler Kester among its state qualifiers.

  • The Pittsburg Wrestling Club and Frontenac Youth Wrestling performed well Saturday at the USAWKS District 1 Championships.
    Wil and Wes Jameson led four Frontenac Youth state qualifiers with first-place finishes and the PWC earned first-place finishes by Tanner Hitchcock and Tyler Kester among its state qualifiers.
    Hitchcock (14U, 90 pounds) officially wrestled one match in his title run, winning a 12-0 majority decision over Gage Matlock of the SEK Jr. Comets. Hitchcock won first place by forfeit over Dylan Gowin of East Kansas.
    Kester (14 U, 110) defeated Bradley Young of Leavenworth, Thomas Lisher of East Kansas and Case Pemberton of Linn Co. Twisters. Kester pinned Young in 2 minutes, 25 seconds and won 5-2 and 4-2 decisions against Lisher and Pemberton, respectively.
    Matthew Smith (8U, 73) of the PWC finished third with a 3-1 record. Smith lost a 3-1 decision to Ethan Witzke of Bonner Springs but took his consolation semifinal match and his third-place match with a 4-1 decision over Wyatt Bird of Kansas Thunderstruck (semifinal) and 3-0 decision over Kody Johansen of Team Hawks (third place). Smith won his first match by a 13-0 majority decision over Sam Twombly of Rossville.
    Likewise, Justice Compton (8U, 70) finished third with a 3-1 mark. Compton lost a 4-2 semifinal decision to Dylan Elmore of Paola but rebounded with decisions over Tyler Davis of Team Hawks (4-0, consolation semifinal) and Keaton Shelman of Lawrence Elite (6-0, third place). Compton won a sudden victory over Shelman in their quarterfinal match.
    A.J. Lair (12U, 84) became the third PWC wrestler to win his quarterfinal match, lose his semifinal match and recover with consolation semifinal and third-place match victories. Lair won a quarterfinal pin against Bobby Primers of the Kansas City Gladiators, a 17-1 technical fall over Kolton Meditx of Jr. Viking and a 5-0 third place decision over Riley McCall of Blue Valley. Lair lost by pinfall to Brett Bober of Burlington.
    Crispin VonWinklepleck (12U, 150) took second with a 1-1 mark — a 7-0 decision over Raul Ayala of the Topeka Tornado and a loss by pinfall to Kyler Tannahill of Odgen’s Outlaws.
    Keyshawn Jones (14U, 145) won fourth by splitting his four matches. Jones won a 5-1 quarterfinal decision over Zachary Caraccilo of Leavenworth, lost by pinfall to Kody Collins of the Doniphan Co. Grizzlies in the semis, won a 7-4  consolation semi decision over Talon Hilmes of Mill Valley and lost a 3-2 third-place match decision to Jayden Creach of the Ottawa Mat Masters.
    Wil Jameson (10U, 82) won his three matches by pinfall or major decision. He pinned Lane Gates of Leavenworth in 54 seconds of quarterfinal match, won a 9-0 major decision over Steven Parker of Olathe and pinned Brady McDonald of Chanute in 1:50 of championship match.
    Wes Jameson (14U, 105) won by 15-0 tech fall over Jacob Hobson of Bonner Springs, 10-4 decision over Bryce Huber of East Kansas and 5-3 decision over Skyler Hudson of the Olathe Southside Falcons.
    Page 2 of 2 - Brandon Mlekus (14U, 120) of Frontenac Youth took second, winning his first two matches over Shawn Wylie of Bobcat (quarterfinal pin, 1:07) and Anthony Macaluso of STA (6-1 decision) before a championship match loss to Clay Lautt of East Kansas by 7-2 decision.
    Tanner Craig (HS, 138) won his quarterfinal and semifinal matches but lost a 1-0 decision to Andrew Beck of Ogden’s Outlaws in the championship match. Craig won a 13-4 quarterfinal major decision over Dakota Colhouer of Jackson Co. and a win by pin over Chris Mills of CPA.
