  • TROJAN TRIBUNE: Trojan Tribune Staff places at KSPA Regional Contest

  • Trojan Tribune Staff members competed in the Kansas Scholastic Press Association Regional Contest at Pittsburg State University Wednesday, Feb. 20, placing in 18 of 26 contests and achieving the second-best performance ever by a Tribune group in this competition.

  • Trojan Tribune Staff members competed in the Kansas Scholastic Press Association Regional Contest at Pittsburg State University Wednesday, Feb. 20, placing in 18 of 26 contests and achieving the second-best performance ever by a Tribune group in this competition.
    One hundred fourteen students from seven schools, including Girard, Caney Valley, Chanute, Humboldt, Iola, Neodesha and Pittsburg, competed in a variety of on-site and carry-in journalism contests.
    The Girard staff earned two 1st place finishes, four 2nd place finishes, two 3rd place finishes, and ten honorable mentions in 3A-4A competition.
    Results are as follows:
    Aubri Ashbacher, Yearbook Copywriting, 1st; Advertising, H.M.
    Bethany Baker, Infographics, 1st; Editing, 2nd; Headline Writing, 3rd.
    Kenzie Curran, Editorial Cartoon, H.M.
    Austin Egbert, News Writing, 3rd; Newspaper Design, H.M.
    Hadyn Herlocker, Newspaper Sports Writing, 2nd; Feature Writing, H.M.
    Madison Smith, Headline Writing, 2nd; Editorial Cartoon, H.M.; Newspaper Sports Writing, H.M.; and Academic Photography, H.M.
    Katlyn Williams, Academic Photography, H.M.; Cutline Writing, H.M.
    Anissa Zagonel, Yearbook Sports Writing, 2nd; News Writing, H.M.
    All eight staff members qualified to compete in their respective categories at the KSPA State Contest, which will be held at the University of Kansas Saturday, May 4.
    Regarding these results, adviser Mary Jane Dent said, “I am extremely proud of this group for their performance in this competition. This is the second-best performance ever by a Trojan Tribune Staff in KSPA regional competition, and you could not ask for a much better result than that. I congratulate them on their efforts and look forward to state competition.”
    The Trojan Tribune Staff also competed in the Independence Community College High School Competition Day with the following results:
    The Trojan Tribune, Best Newspaper, 1st.
    Bethany Baker, Best Newspaper Reporter, 1st.
    Austin Egbert, Best Photojournalist, 1st.
    Katlyn Williams, Best Photojournalist, 3rd.
    Regarding the ICC results, Mrs. Dent said, “I want to congratulate the entire Trojan Tribune Staff for placing 1st in the Best Newspaper category in ICC competition.
    “This was a team effort and reflects the quality of work the staff does all year long in publishing the Trojan Tribune. This win was especially gratifying since it was our first time entering this contest.
    “I also want to congratulate Bethany, Austin and Katlyn on their individual performance in this competition.
    “Finally, I would like to thank Marilyn Hey for her assistance with transportation to the regional contest and with entering the ICC contest and Edna Waldren for her contributions to the group in so many ways throughout the school year.”
