  • On the inverse of the Pitt State baseball team, the Gorilla softball team lost its fourth straight after being swept Friday in a pair of close games, 3-2 and 4-2, against Northwest Missouri at the PSU Softball Complex.
Pitt State led in the first game from the bottom of the third through the top of the seventh.
The Gorillas scored their only runs in the third, helped out by Northwest Missouri errors. Catie Cummins reached on an error and Cheslyn Mitchell singled and both later scored on a hit by Brenna George and another Northwest Missouri error.
In the top of the seventh, a Pitt State error helped set the stage for the game-tying home run by Kristen Uthe. Three more Northwest Missouri hits produced the game-winning run against tough-luck pitcher Kyndel Shelburn.
Shelburn fanned 11 Bearcats and entered the seventh inning allowing no runs on two hits. Only one of the three runs counted as earned.
Pitt State left six runners on base in an one-run contest.
Tiffany Brown, Brenna George and Katelyn Birchfield each recorded two hits with Brown responsible for the lone extra-base hit, a double.
In the second game, Northwest Missouri jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with two in the third. Stephanie Price delivered a RBI double.
The score remained 2-0 until the bottom of the sixth when the Gorillas knotted it up with the help of a walk by Brown and Kreslee Ketcham reaching on a fielding error. McKenzie Rynard plated Brown and Ketcham for a brand new ballgame with a double, one of only four Pitt State hits against winning pitcher Abbie Vitosh.
Unfortunately, for the Gorillas, Northwest Missouri answered with two runs and retired Pitt State 1-2-3 in the seventh for the sweep.
Pitt State lost two Wednesday in Russellville against Arkansas Tech and returned home for a weekend set of four games against Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association foes Northwest Missouri and Missouri Western. The Gorillas dropped to 17-13 and 5-5 MIAA.
Close games have been rough on Pitt State, especially at home. The Gorillas drop to 4-6 at home with four of their six losses by one run and the other two by two runs.
Pitt State and Missouri Western begin their doubleheader at high noon today.
