  • Pittsburg Wrestling Club member Tanner Hitchcock can add one more state title to his collection.
Hitchcock won the 14-and-under, 90-pound state title Saturday in the USAWKS 2013 State Folkstyle Championship at the Kansas Expocentre (Landon Arena).
Hitchcock began his title journey with a win by pinfall over Parker Ritchie of the Andover Jaguar Wrestling Club and then won major decisions over Joe Gallegos of St. Marys (10-0) and Carter Guyer of Andover (11-0) en route to a 6-0 overtime decision over Zachary Grantham of the Maize Wrestling Club for the title.
Wil Jameson of Frontenac Youth Wrestling (10U, 82) finished second. He lost a 4-2 overtime decision to Devin Gomez of Hillsboro in the championship match.
Jameson won his first three matches convincingly — a 9-0 major decision to give Jake Knowles of the Team of Hard Knox even more hard knocks, a 6-0 decision over Levi Sutton of Salina and a pin of J.D. Robson of Greater Gold GC in 1:40.
Brandon Mlekus of Frontenac (14U, 120) won his first two matches but lost two of his final three to finish in fourth.
Mlekus reached the semifinals by a 10-6 decision over Josh Moore of the Augusta Wrestling Club and a 19-4 technical fall over Isaac Stone of Tribune. Mlekus lost a 11-9 semifinal decision of Kameron Frame of the Kansas Young Guns. He came back with a 7-0 consolation semifinal win over Dekhyale McFarland of Salina before a 5-0 loss to Clay Lautt of East Kansas.
Tyler Kester (14U, 110) and Crispin VonWinklepleck (12U, 150) of PWC each placed fifth.
Kester won a 3-2 decision over Bryce Ledford of Winfield, lost a 16-0 tech fall decision to Ryan Delforge of Newton in the quarterfinals, won a 11-4 decision over Chris Deters of Marysville, lost a 12-6 consolation semi decision to Gary Joint of Junction City and won a 6-2 decision over Case Pemberton of the Linn Co. Twisters in his final match.
In any match involving VonWinklepleck, a pin seemed eminent. VonWinklepleck pinned Bryce Westmoreland of Derby in 47 seconds, he was pinned by Hunter Christensen of Manhattan Optimist in 48 seconds, pinned Dylan Jensen of Hutchinson Kids in 1:45, pinned Raul Ayula of Topeka Tornado in 2:05 and pinned Ethan Willis of Clearwater in 3:28 in his match.
Only one of VonWinklepleck’s six matches did not end in pinfall.
The Kansas Expocentre opened in 1987 with a Kenny Rogers, T. Graham Brown and Ronnie Milsap concert.
