The St. Mary’s Colgan Panthers used all four elements of winning baseball during a doubleheader sweep Friday night of the Baxter Springs Lions at JayCee Ballpark, 7-0 and 9-0.
Christian Cedeno, Tully Yoakam, V.J. Piccini and Drew Dawson combined to allow no runs on eight hits over 14 innings. Cedeno and Yoakam pitched a three-hitter in the first game, Piccini and Dawson a five-hitter in the second. Cedeno struck out nine, including five in a row in the first, second and third.
The Panther defense committed one error and stopped every possible Baxter Springs scoring rally with a double play or a diving catch in the outfield.
Colgan stole 18 bases, including 11 in the opener with four apiece from Nate Grimaldi and Luke Marquardt.
Colgan produced 11 hits in the nightcap, highlighted by a two-run triple by Grimaldi and a two-run single by Austin Kratz.
“The difference tonight,” Colgan head coach Mike Watt said. “I felt like we’ve pitched fairly well and played pretty good defense in our previous three games (all one-run losses against Nevada and Frontenac). Tonight, what we did was that we continued that and we added some offense. That makes a big difference when you have a little bit of a lead. You can relax everywhere on the field and it showed tonight. I thought we came out and just had fun.”
In the opener, Baxter did not manage its first hit against Cedeno until the fourth with a two-out single by Josh Fry. The Lions then left behind two runners in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh, a trend.
Colgan scored the only run necessary in the first as Grimaldi led off with a single and stole his way around to score on a Cedeno RBI groundout. The Panthers added five runs in the second as the Lions fell apart defensively and gave Colgan a run by not being able to make the pitcher-catcher connection.
“Team speed’s one of our strengths and we were able to take advantage of some things,” Watt said. “We got them in scoring advantage tonight and were able to come through with some hits. That’s something we’ve been lacking. It was good to see.”
In the second game, Colgan scored one in the first, three in the second and five in the sixth.
Yoakam and Colton Gilbert hit back-to-back singles in the second. That’s when the super-fast Grimaldi found the right-center gap for a two-run triple. Grimaldi would later score as he forced a bad throw by Fry on a infield popout.
Kratz hit a two-run single in the sixth. Cedeno and Yoakam added RBI singles.
Page 2 of 2 - “We came out with a great attitude,” Watt said. “We didn’t come out with the attitude of an 0-3 team. We came out with the attitude that it’s baseball and we’ve tried and we’re just going to keep working and getting better. I thought we played very well.”
Unfortunately for Colgan, junior shortstop Luke Marquardt left the field in the fourth inning of the second game. Marquardt slid awkwardly back into first base, landing horribly on his arm during a pickoff. Watt said that Marquardt’s potential long-term absence from the Colgan lineup would be a “big loss,” for his range at shortstop, his strong arm both at short and pitching, and his ability to wreak havoc on the bases.
Colgan (2-3, 2-2 Crawford-Neosho-Cherokee) plays non-CNC opponents Independence (Tuesday) and Webb City (Friday) in varsity/JV doubleheaders at JayCee Ballpark.
