Pittsburg State senior shortstop Amanda DeCastro has been named an MIAA Co-Hitter of the Week for games from March 20-26, the league announced Tuesday.

Pittsburg State senior shortstop Amanda DeCastro has been named an MIAA Co-Hitter of the Week for games from March 20-26, the league announced Tuesday.

DeCastro, a native of Carl Junction, Mo., finished last week with a .571 batting average (8-for-14) in four games against Northwest Missouri and Truman. She recorded six runs, nine RBI, two doubles and three home runs on the weekend.

DeCastro started the weekend strong with a 3-for-3 performance with five RBI, two runs, two doubles and a home run in the first game against Northwest Missouri. She followed with a 3-for-4 performance with three runs scored, three RBI and two home runs in game two. She scored the game-winning run in both games against the Bearcats and had the game-winning hit (a home run) in game two. Against Truman, DeCastro went 2-for-7 with a run and an RBI.

Missouri Southern’s Brooke Hurley was the other co-hitter of the week, while Fort Hays State's Maddie Holub was named the pitcher of the week.

Pitt State and Missouri Southern will face off in a conference doubleheader at Kungle Field in Joplin today beginning at 5 p.m.

Missouri Southern is 12-17 on the season and also 4-0 in conference games. The team has six players hitting over .300 on the season and are led by Breanna Volkmann with a .420 average. The Lions are hitting .298 as a team and have a 4.09 team ERA.

Pitt State is 15-16 on the year and 4-0 in MIAA play. The Gorillas are hitting at a .312 clip with a .501 slugging percentage. The Gorillas have already hit 33 home runs on the season. Pitt State have two players, DeCastro and Tiffany Brown, hitting over .400 on the year, with DeCastro leading the team with a .456 batting average and a .897 slugging percentage. Seven more Gorilla players have over .300 averages on the year.
The Pitt State pitching staff has a 3.66 ERA. Jessica Barnes leads the staff with a 2.15 ERA, Cheslyn Mitchell has a 4-1 record and Hilary Erbert has made the most appearances and owns a 7-8 record. She also leads the staff in strikeouts.
