The historic town square of Girard was the site of a devastating fire that claimed one person’s life and damaged several businesses.

In the early hours of March 3, a fire broke out on the west side of the Girard city square. The body of Dyana Conroy, owner of the White Elephant flea market, was found in the rubble that was once her business.

Fire officials determined Conroy made the initial 911 call, but was unable to be rescued in time.

The fire also destroyed the business In the Pink, a cosmetics store, as well as damaging Heidrick Appliance.
