Six GHS students were selected to participate in Pittsburg State University’s Math Honor Day held in the Jack H. Overman Student Center on Thursday, Oct. 7.

Students participating must have placed well at PSU Math Relays and were selected by math teachers Christen Jackson and Steve Taylor.

Seniors selected to attend included Kaleb Belcher, Zack Foraker, Ashlee Hisey, and Will Zimmerman. Juniors were Ben Coomes and Rachel Rawlings.

The group first viewed a planetarium show that informed them about the placement of stars in the Earth’s viewing field.

Students then participated in sessions that included mathematical permutations, math games, and strategic problem solving.

During lunch, students attended an award presentation and listened to actuary Jennifer Jabben, from Allstate Insurance, who gave a presentation over the benefits and jobs of an actuary.

In response to the event, senior Ashlee Hisey said, “I was very honored to be selected for such an interesting program.

“It really opened my eyes to the many uses of mathematics in the everyday world.”
