SALINA — Not many senior wrestlers close out their high school careers with state championships.

Pittsburg seniors Aaron Seybold (145 pounds) and Broc Bennett (285) can make that claim after the final day of wrestling Saturday at the Class 4A state tournament.
Both championship matches were the definition of dogfight.

Seybold won his second state title (he won his first one last year wrestling at 135 pounds in Class 5A) with a 2-1 decision over Jonathan Blackwell of Bonner Springs. Both wrestlers had two losses on the season entering Saturday and Seybold ended his season 38-2, Blackwell 44-3.

Bennett won his first state title (his older brother, Beau, won a Class 5A state title in 2010) with a 3-1 overtime decision over Bo Lanning of McPherson. Bennett (34-6) reached the finals with a four-overtime 3-2 decision over Caleb King of KC Piper.

Pittsburg, third in the standings after the first day, ended fourth place — its highest state finish, a one-spot improvement on last year. The Purple Dragons had 65 points entering Saturday and finished with 80.

Levi Kester (106) lost his first consolation match to Josiah Seaton of Bonner Springs (4-3 decision) but defeated David Mainus of Colby (5-1) for a fifth-place medal. Kester ended his season 26-14.

Jeremiah Jones (113) earned his second sixth-place medal. In the consolation bracket, Jones defeated Simon Munoz of Topeka Hayden (7-6 decision), defeated Derek Mead of Concordia (5-3) and then lost to Cesar Regalado of Pratt in the consolation semis (6-3).

This loss set up a fifth-place match between Jones and Adam Cole of Chanute, opponents who faced one another in league, regional and state competition. Cole made it a clean sweep with a pin of Jones in 2:46. Jones ended his season 27-16.

Consolation bracket matches: Brett Cobb (126) lost 3-1 to Clay Kear of Andale. Jacob Wools (132) lost 8-3 to Brenden Lewis of Larned. Brent Koehn (182) lost 5-1 to Dalton Clark of McPherson. Gershom Avalos (220) lost 11-1 to Jordan Drybread of Chanute.

Chanute senior Sam Son completed an incredible season 44-0, defeating Gavin Grater of Clay Center 5-2 in the 160-pound championship match.
