A Topeka teenager is joining state officials in urging Kansans not to text while driving.

Sixteen-year-old Erica Bell wrecked her car last month while checking on a text message. The Seaman High School sophomore now keeps her friends from texting while driving.

She joined state officials and highway safety advocates Tuesday for a news conference on the issue.

The event came a day before Kansas legislators planned to reconvene. House and Senate negotiators are working on a bill to ban texting while driving. The measure is likely to make driving while texting a traffic infraction, punishable by a $60 fine.
