When Girard High School juniors were trying to decide on a theme for tonight's prom, two stood above the rest: Titanic and Pirates of the Caribbean.
"I guess our class has a thing for ships," said Christina Biancarelli, spokesperson for the prom committee.
Titanic won out after a class vote, Biancarelli said, because "we wanted something classy and elegant." She said the months of planning and long days decorating inside the school has paid off.
"We really have surprised ourselves with how elegant it has become," Biancarelli said. The colors for tonight's event are red, black and white.
Despite the chance of cold, nasty weather, Biancarelli said the prom will go on — no matter what. She said there has been no talks of either postponing or canceling this year's prom.
"Absolutely not," she said. "We've put way too much effort into this."
The only effect the weather may have is on the promenade. Traditionally an outdoor event, Biancarelli said an alternate indoor route has been planned.

PHS plans ‘Midnight Masquerade”
The forecasted cold weather for Saturday evening also made prom planners at Pittsburg High School make a script revision.
The promenade for the PHS prom, which will take place inside the Crimson and Gold Ballroom at Pittsburg State University's Jack H. Overman Student Center, also has been moved indoors because of the weather.
"We usually have everyone line up outside and walk in, but this year we're going to have to do it inside," said Kelsey Parks, PHS junior and member of the prom committee."
This year's theme is "Midnight Masquerade." Large clocks throughout the decorations represent midnight, while more than 350 painted masks represent the masquerade aspect. The colors for the prom are black, red and silver.
Parks said the prom committee got started a little late this year organizing the event, but has been working steady for about six weeks. She said choosing a theme was a major decision made early in the process.
"We had others we looked at," she said, "but this was one everyone wanted."
