With state and federal budgets for public broadcasting shrinking, KRPS 89.9 FM at Pittsburg State University needs public support more now than ever, officials say.
“You are the Missing Piece of the Puzzle” is the name of this year’s KRPS membership campaign, which began Tuesday and will run through Saturday, April 4. The station aims to raise $77,769, which is the exact amount needed to make their yearly budget following a similar fundraiser held in the fall.
“A large portion of our support comes directly from our listeners,” said Missi Kelly, general manager of KRPS. “When a listener gives any amount of contribution, even $5, they become a member for a year.”
The station’s full-time staff of seven is working overtime to drum up listener support. Kelly said “pitchers,” or radio personalities soliciting donations, will be on air all day from early morning to late night during the campaign.
Those who donate $75 or more will receive a KRPS mug, while those who donate $120 or more will get a public radio bookmark. This gadget allows listeners who have to leave the radio to simply press a button to “bookmark” the program they were hearing.
Later, when the listener plugs the device into their computer, the gadget will automatically retrieve information and links for the program.
But Kelly said prizes aren’t the main reason to become a KRPS supporter.
“The most important part is they’re supporting the programs they listen to and enjoy, and ensuring that KRPS will continue to stay on the air and bring them those programs,” Kelly said.
KRPS accepts credit cards, personal checks, cash and money orders. PSU employees can even have donations deducted from their paychecks.
