Scoring with runners in scoring position is vital in the game of baseball.

The Atchison Senior A’s found that out the hard way after failing to score with two runners on in the top of the ninth, holding a 3-2 lead in the first game of the Kansas AAA American Legion State baseball tournament at JayCee Ballpark Wednesday.

Tonganoxie came up in the bottom of the ninth, scored two runs and defeated Atchison, 4-3.

Cory Klinkenburg led off the Tonganoxie half of the ninth with a single and he moved to second on a wild pitch. He scored the tying run after a double by Blaize Oelschlaeger into right field.

Grant Ebbert hit a follow-up single to score Oshlager with the winning run.

The A’s picked up RBI singles in the eighth from Michael Eplee and starting pitcher Greg Denton to break a 1-1 tie.

With two outs in the top of the eighth, Atchison catcher Christopher Lund singled to put runners at first and second.

Eplee gave Atchison a 2-1 lead with a sharp single that scored Matt Hager. The rally continued when Denton hit an RBI single to score Lund and put Atchison up 3-1.

Tonganoxie came back in the bottom of the inning when third baseman Kyle Newton roped an RBI single to score Jacob Stauch from third with two outs, but that was all the damage they could do in the eighth.
