Over five hours of a high school baseball doubleheader Monday night at the Raider Sports Complex, fans saw a little bit of everything between the Frontenac Raiders and the St. Mary’s Colgan Panthers.
Rain drops, snow flakes, double plays, sacrifice bunts, a player ejection, fly balls lost in the lights, infield singles, extra-base hits and two walk-off singles to give Frontenac a doubleheader sweep by identical 5-4 scores.
Ross Edge hit the game-winning single in the first game and Brett Macary drove in Bryce Burdette and Bryan Wade with the winning runs in the second game, averting extra innings.
Frontenac began the doubleheader looking as if the Raiders could pull away, taking a 3-0 lead after two innings. Starting pitcher Blake Vail cruised past the first two frames and the Raiders received a Vail RBI single, a Burdette RBI single and a Gus Brunetti RBI triple which gave Colgan right fielder Colton Gilbert trouble deep in the drenched outfield.
However, Vail ran into trouble in the third as the Panthers strung together consecutive
run-producing singles by Austin Kratz, Drew Dawson and Christian Cedeno. Vail did not make it out of the third, replaced by Macary, who pitched over four scoreless innings.
Frontenac tied it up in the fourth on a bases-loaded walk by Matt Standlee.
The scoring remained inert over the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
With one down in the bottom of the eighth, Blake Vail singled. Colgan head coach Mike Watt chose to intentionally walk Matt Standlee with the plan to induce Blake Barto into hitting a double-play grounder.
Barto hit a grounder up the middle but shortstop Luke Marquardt and second baseman Kratz both found treacherous footing in the middle of the infield. Colgan only retired Standlee at second on the fielder’s choice, leaving Barto at first and winning run Vail at third.
With two outs, Edge delivered the game-winning single.
Colgan scored first in the second game. No. 2 hitter Kratz hit a double, lost in the lights by Frontenac center fielder Burdette, and scored on a Christian Cedeno single into shallow right field. Barto ran down the ball and made a strong throw into second to get Cedeno out and end the inning.
Frontenac went down 1-2-3 in the first and second innings against Colgan senior V.J. Piccini but Edge started the Raider offense in the third with a leadoff single. Piccini hit Nick Zafuta and Brunetti back-to-back and walked Burdette to knot up the score.
Colgan broke a 3-all score in the top half of the seventh with a bases-loaded walk by Dawson. The Panthers trailed 3-2 entering their final at-bat.
However, that lead did not last very long as Burdette, Wade and Macary hit back-to-back-to-back singles off Dawson. Macary plated Burdette and Wade for the sweep.
