  • Girard head coach Rod Wescott found it somewhat difficult to evaluate the overall performance of his team Friday night during a 87-48 win over the Baxter Springs Lions because of the helter-skelter playing style of the Lions.
Baxter Springs pressed wall-to-wall and substituted in five new players seemingly every dead ball. Girard finished with 21 turnovers, same as Baxter Springs.
“I thought we did a good job (handling their press),” Wescott said. “We needed to get the ball in the middle and when we did that, things went well. When we didn’t, we had some trouble. For the most part, I was pleased.”
The Lions scored the first two points of the game and by the time Nick Abernathy scored the next Baxter points late in the first quarter, Girard led 24-4 and would lead 26-7 at the end of the first after Baxter guard Dallas Hutchinson buried a long 3 at the buzzer.
“It’s hard to judge how we did in the halfcourt,” Wescott said. “The game was so up and down and in a different style than we played the first two games (Iola and Pittsburg). We definitely got to the rim.”
Girard had four players score double figures and six players with at least seven points — Devin Alters 19, Nick George 17, Drew Davied 16, Trenton Stolte 10, Cody Grilz seven and Austin O’Dell seven.
Alters scored all 19 points in the first half, and including a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer, and George picked up 15 points after halftime as his teammates found him for press-breaking layups. Davied scored 12 in the first half as Girard led 52-24 at intermission.
The Trojans extended their lead to 75-43 after three and the game went into running clock mode in the fourth before matters could get even uglier down the stretch of a blowout.
Nick Abernathy led Baxter with 18 points and Cody Rowe added 10.
Girard (2-1) plays next Friday against Labette County, the preseason co-favorite of the Southeast Kansas League which defeated Frontenac 77-44 on Tuesday.

In a game that went down to the wire at Ted R. Taylor Gymnasium, Girard sophomore MaCahla Leslie swatted away the shot of Baxter Springs guard Ashleigh Grimes in the last moments. The ball went out-of-bounds as time expired and no foul was called, preserving the one-point win for the Trojans.
Girard senior guard Hadyn Herlocker split a pair of free throws to give the Trojans their 45-44 lead with 6.1 seconds remaining. Baxter Springs called a timeout at 5.3 and then Grimes made the final lengthy drive to the basket.
“We played a good Baxter Springs team and they gave us one of their best shots,” Girard head coach Brad Herlocker said. “The girls responded with poise and executed the plays we wanted them to run down the stretch.”
Page 2 of 2 - In the second quarter, Baxter Springs trailed by as many as 28-12 and the Lions struggled with the Girard pressure defense, especially with senior guard Hope McLeod dogging Baxter senior guard Nina Spence all over the floor. Baxter committed 13 first half turnovers and only two in the second half — hand-in-hand with that, the Lions outscored Girard 23-13 after halftime.
“They scraped and clawed their way back into the game,” Coach Herlocker said. “Our defense allowed them not to execute. In the first half, they came out real tentative and we took advantage of it. I felt both teams executed offensively a lot better in the second half.”
Hadyn Herlocker led Girard with 22 points and three more players scored at least five — Carly Heatherly seven, McLeod six and Jenna Schroeder five.
Baxter Springs was led by Aleigh Grimes and her double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds. Spence finished with 11 points and six rebounds. Ashleigh Grimes added 10 points for a third Baxter player in double figures.
Girard (2-1) travels to Parsons on Monday for a girls-only contest. The Trojans play a Labette County-heavy schedule next week between the Vikings of Parsons on Monday and the Grizzlies of Labette County next Friday.
