A spring blizzard forging its way through Kansas is covering highways with ice and snow, while freezing rain builds up in the Wichita area.

Heavy snow and 40-mile-an-hour winds created dangerous driving conditions as the storm moved through the Dodge City area. The National Weather Service in Wichita reported ice was building up on trees, power lines and roads in southeast Kansas Friday morning.

Blizzard warnings follow a line from just west of Hays southeast to a point east of Wichita to the Oklahoma border. The warnings are expected to remain posted through late Fridcay or Saturday.

The Kansas Department of Transportation reported U.S. 283 was closed from just south of Dodge City to U.S. 54 and expects more closures Friday.
