The table was set for Pittsburg State senior Eileen Treff to become a hero on Saturday afternoon at the PSU Softball Complex.
Treff connected on a hit in the bottom of the seventh to score the winning run in the second game of a doubleheader with No. 21 Emporia State 2-1 on Senior Day. The win marked the first time in six years the Gorillas beat the Hornets. That is a stretch of 14 games without a win over Emporia State.
Coming off a 3-1 loss to the Hornets the Gorillas were set up with a possibility to win the second game in the bottom of the seventh after Lora Lockhart led off the inning with a double to right field.
However, PSU head coach Brad Horky immediately called a timeout with some concerns.
“When we got on second base with the double I was scared that if we bunted to third they would intentionally load the bases so I called time out,” Horky said. “There would have been a mutiny because, in unison, they convinced me to hit and we got the runner moved up to third so that was the player’s call.
“I was afraid, if we bunted, they would intentionally load the bases, which is what I would have done to get to the bottom of the lineup, but we got her to third and a chopper to score her.”
Treff knew that the pressure was on after Lockhart got to third after Haley Deaton sacrificed her over to third on a ground out.
Treff hit a squibb to shortstop April Huddleston, who bobbled the ball and could not make a play, allowing Lockhart to score the winning run.
“My thought was just to hit the ball hard on the ground and we would score and win and that is all I needed to do and wanted to do,” Treff said. “I knew as soon as I hit it that we were going to score but I was surprised that she bobbled it.”
But there was no question that Lockhart was going to run on contact from Treff.
“Our baserunning rules are contact on third and they do not wait for me to give them a sign to go,” Horky said. “If a ball is in the triangle they are going. What Eileen tried to do was hit it there and she did.”
After Emporia State took a 1-0 lead in the third, the Gorillas answered in the bottom of the fourth when Lindsay Birchfield clocked a solo home run over the center field wall to tie the game.
Over the next two innings, Horky was left pacing back and forth in front of the PSU dugout.
“What was running through my mind was that we are in the end of April and Pittsburg State is in a big ball game,” Horky said. “I wanted to win it for the seniors and for the girls that came to turn it around with me.
“We had such a let down against Baptist and this just put us back in the whole thing again,” Horky said. “I was nervous and trying to find a way to pull this out.”
Gorilla starting pitcher Stephanie Moore kept the Gorillas in the game by getting out of a jam in the sixth after the Hornets left runners at first and second and the retired the side in the top of the seventh.
But it was the timeout after Lockhart’s double in the bottom of the seventh that may have been the key to the win.
“We were discussing strategy on whether we wanted to bunt her over or hit her over and coach was a little concerned,” Treff said. “We wanted to hit the ball because we are an aggressive team and we wanted to hit the ball.”
In the first game, the Hornets jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Tiffany Swanson belted a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth.
“We battled them for probably 13 of the 14 innings,” Horky said. “We got down 3-0 and then got right back in it and I really did not realize it but I think you can safely say that we outplayed them for the last 12 or so innings of the series.”
The Gorillas (22-26, 10-8 MIAA) close out the regular season at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Drury with a region doubleheader before traveling to Shawnee for the MIAA postseason tournament on Thursday.
