Howard L. Smith, 88, of Erie, died at 7:49 A.M. Monday, April 28, 2008 at the Prairie Mission Retirement Village. 

Howard L. Smith, 88, of Erie, died at 7:49 A.M. Monday, April 28, 2008 at the Prairie Mission Retirement Village. 

He was born on December 7, 1919 at Stark, KS, a son of Ray W. and Mida C. (Comer) Smith. He grew up and attended school in Stark and graduated from the Chanute High School. Upon completing high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and served in World War II. Following his discharge he moved to Parsons and was employed with the Soil Conservation Office. In the late 1940's he moved to Phillipsburg, KS where he managed a grain elevator. He moved to Garnett in 1958 to manage the elevator there.  He later managed Montogermy Ward in Garnett. He returned to Erie in 1975.

He was united in marriage to Cecila Irene Schoenhofer in 1943 at St. Paul. She preceded him in death on December 24, 1977. He then married Cleda McCullough on April 20, 1982. She survives. 

He was a member of the Erie Federated Church.  After World War II., he played semi-professional baseball. He enjoyed golfing, hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed watching college basketball. 

In addition to his wife, survivors include: Three daughters - Nancy Gretencord, and her husband, Larry, Wellsville, KS; Gloria Henggeler, and her husband, Mike, Columbus, NE; Sandra Donhauser, Wichita, KS; Ten grandchildren; Nine great-grandchildren (one additional great-grandchild is due in June); Two brothers - Robert Smith, Phoenix, AZ; Perry Smith, Huntsville, TX.

He was preceded in death by one brother - Dean Smith.

Funeral services are scheduled to be held at 2:30 P.M. Friday, May 2, 2008 at the Pierce-Carson-Wall Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Jordan officiating. Burial will be in the East Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friend from 1-2 P.M. Friday. Memorials are suggested to Hospice Care of Kansas, or to the Federated Church, and may be left at the funeral home.
