The junior high boys’ and girls’ basketball teams are on a roll. The girls’ first game was at St.Paul against Altoona-Midway. The SPJH girls’ A team won in a blowout with a 41 – 1 victory. The girls B team won 22 – 2. The second game of the season was at St.Paul against Chetopa. The A team won again, 38 – 17. The score of the B team was 24 – 0 in the Indians’ favor.
The girls’ main goal for the season is to win games and win the league tournament at the end of the season. The girls said they need to have good practices in order to get better. From the first day of practice, the girls have improved on their fundamentals and their ball control.
The boys also played their first game against Altoona. The SPJH boys’ A team won 40 – 8, and the B team won 16 – 0. Their second game of the season was versus Chetopa. The A team once again won in a 37 – 29 victory over the Hornets. The B team also won 25 – 8.
The boys plan to get better in practice by pushing each other and working hard. Their goals for the season are to go undefeated and win the tournament. From the first day of practice, the boys have improved on dribbling, and jump-stopping.
“The biggest surprise is the amount of talent they have, and the success that they could have.” said DJ Vitt, the team’s assistant coach.
By the end of the season head coach Adam Burke and Vitt expect to see a much improved group of kids. Both coaches agreed that no kids are easy to coach, but they all work to do what is taught and work hard at it.
All in all we’d have to say there is a great group of kids playing this year, and we wish you luck for an outstanding and safe season!
