  • The Frontenac wrestling team pinned down a dramatic sweep Thursday night over Jayhawk-Linn and Parsons.
Trailing Parsons 34-24 headed into the final two matches of the night, Frontenac needed two pins to win and sophomores Tanner Edwards (220 pounds) and Kyle Loy (285) delivered back-to-back pins, Edwards in 1 minute, 1 second over Steven Cronick and Loy in 11 seconds over Buzz Jones. This pin gave Frontenac a 36-34 win and its first double-dual sweep in the two-year history of the wrestling program at the varsity level.
“It was a dramatic win against Parsons,” Frontenac head coach Keith Aikin said. “I told them before we went out there that we had to have big wins. We had some kids who didn’t wrestle as tough as we thought we could but we had other kids step up to the plate and take charge. Exciting win. You know what? It doesn’t matter what the score was, we won.”
In between the first and second period of the 138-pound match between Frontenac senior Tanner Craig and Parsons freshman Dylan Misener, Aikin gave Craig one instruction — YOU HAVE TO PIN HIM! Sure enough, with 19 seconds remaining in the second period, Craig pinned Misener and narrowed the Parsons lead to 18-12. Craig won both his matches Thursday night.
Craig, the lone senior, has been in the FHS wrestling program all three years of its existence.
“Tanner’s been instrumental to everybody’s success,” Aikin said. “He’s been here since the beginning of the program. We’ve had our program three years now and he’s been there every day. He’s not missed one practice since we started this program. He’s got an impeccable work ethic, he’s tough, he’s got a never say die attitude and if we can get him to stay focused, he’s going to be very hard to beat at regionals. Right now, he’s 18-3 and he’s beat a few state qualifiers going into our tournament this weekend in Topeka. He’s been an amazing kid to work with. He’ll be a big loss to the team but with his work ethic, he’s definitely plowed the way for the younger kids.”
Aikin said the emotion of the sweep at home Thursday night will help a 11-man Frontenac roster populated by eight sophomores moving forward.
In the first dual of the night for the Raiders, Frontenac gained an early 27-0 lead on Jayhawk-Linn and survived two losses by pinfall to win 42-12.
